چکیده

Over the past three years, in collaboration with several domain scientists, we have studied the needs of a wide range of experimental disciplines, developed solutions to some of the basic problems in experiment management, and have made significant progress towards implementing a simple Desktop Experiment Management Environment (DEME) called Zoo. Our work has proceeded in a tight loop between developing generic experiment management technology that is implemented in a generic tool, Zoo, installing customized enhancements of the tool that constitute full systems (complete Customized Desktop Experiment ManagementSystems (CDEMSs)) in laboratories of interest, and using the provided feedback to guide our research directions. The overall Zoo project has been described in the 1996 VLDB Conference [7]. Specific aspects of the project and some of the Zoo modules have also been discussed elsewhere: the role of schemas in Zoo [5], the theoretical framework used for schema visualization [2] and the resulting prototype schema manager [3, 6], the data model and query language [8], and the object-to-file translator [1]. In this short paper, we first outline the overall architecture of Zoo

Integrated approaches to understanding and managing Meloidogyne hapla populations’ parasitic variability

The pending loss of methyl bromide (MBr) and less understood nematode adaptation behaviour present significant challenges in managing Meloidogyne hapla in vegetable and nursery industries in temperate climates. This study examined the reproductive potential of populations of M. hapla from three nursery (Fields 1–3), one vegetable (Field 4) production system, and their response to a nutritionbas...

Achieving true sustainability of zoo populations.

For the last 30 years, cooperative management of irreplaceable animal populations in zoos and aquariums has focused primarily on the goal of minimizing genetic decay within defined time frames, and large advances have been made in technologies to optimize genetic management of closed populations. However, recent analyses have shown that most zoo programs are not projected to meet their stated g...

Prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in zoo animals in Pakistan

The study was carried out in zoo animals at Islamabad Zoo, Pakistan to know the prevalence of bovinetuberculosis. An overall prevalence of 3.3% was recorded in zoo animals with 3.6% in Bovidae, 3.2% inCervidae and 0% in Equidae families. The positive animals included spotted deer (1/3; 95% CI = 0.84,90.57), Chinkara gazella (1/5; 95% CI = 0.51, 71.64) and Blackbuck gazelle (1/30; 95% CI = 0.08,...

Identifying Uncertain Galaxy Morphologies Using Unsupervised Learning

With the onset of massive cosmological data collection through mediums such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), galaxy classification has been accomplished for the most part with the help of citizen science communities like Galaxy Zoo. However, an analysis of one of the Galaxy Zoo morphological classification data sets has shown that a significant majority of all classified galaxies are, in...

Intervention Strategies for Increasing Engagement in Crowdsourcing: Platform, Predictions, and Experiments

Volunteer-based crowdsourcing depend critically on maintaining the engagement of participants. We explore a methodology for extending engagement in citizen science by combining machine learning with intervention design. We first present a platform for using real-time predictions about forthcoming disengagement to guide interventions. Then we discuss a set of experiments with delivering differen...
